Appropriate Sunday Church Behavior

There is only one day out of the week that Sunday worshipers set aside solely to worship God, and because this day is sacred, if you have ever attended church, then you know that you must follow certain rules.

Dress code and behavior

When attending church, never bare too much skin; that rule pertains to your arms, back, legs and bosom. If you are a woman, then do not wear a miniskirt; instead, wear a skirt that is no more than two inches above the knee. If you are a man, then do not wear shorts or T-shirts, and do not leer at a woman who is inappropriately dressed. Stay awake; dozing off during the sermon is in poor taste. Refrain from chatting with others or making any other distracting noises during the service. Gum chewing is not allowed and neither is making frequent trips to the bathroom. Resist all urges to respond to your Facebook messages, tweets or IM's during church. All of that can wait.

Participating in church

Sunday mass revolves around following church rituals. This means that at certain points you must sit, stand or kneel. It may appear rude if you do not perform these actions at the appropriate time. If the church has a collection, come prepared to make a monetary contribution. Even if you do not give as much as Bible laws dictate, you are bound to feel much better after donating something to help keep the church running.

Church customs and behaviors differ amongst faiths and sometimes between each church within a faith. For instance, some churches are more relaxed, and the congregation is not expected to dress up when attending services. If you are visiting a new church, then it is best to find out ahead of time what type of attire and behavior is expected so you are properly prepared.
